Now when you get down to thinkin it… Why isn’t there more people championing these kinda causes? I mean the world as we know it is becoming undone (again) and when the shrooms came, there were huge armies facing them, but now…?

Well, for some people, the sun IS a deadly force. The trolls for starters. Still, if the fae who are around now knew the terrors that lurked under a truly sun-less sky, they might not be quite so eager to help Maldik with his self-professed crusade.
